LEADERSHIP SERIES, Part 2

ID-10064003This is part 2 of the Leadership Series which discusses the major styles of leadership. It will help you to classify yourself and know the way forward for you as a leader in any area of your life. You may share your comments with us after reading this article.

Styles of leadership

Good leaders exhibit a specific style along with certain attitudes. What is your leadership style? Several leadership styles exist. Below are some of the important leadership styles that exist.

The Authoritarian Leadership (Autocrat):

Advantages:

This style is useful in situations where fast, expeditious and tightly controlled decisions are required.

Disadvantages:

1.If you are an autocratic leader, you are very controlling. You feel that you know it all and that your colleagues know little. You never ask their advice.

2.You make all the decisions and provide no explanations since you are the leader. You are the leader. You are sure of yourself. You hand out tasks. You oversee other board members and accept or reject their contributions and even their way of thinking and acting.

3.Under this type of management, other directors often become quite dependent and unable to function effectively on their own.

4.When the leader is not present, the activity of all others generally slows down.

5.Members are passive. You give them all they need and think for them. They depend on you. Your attitude can be summed up in one sentence: Do what I tell you.

Democratic leadership:

You consult the members and employees and encourage them to participate in decision making and in seeking solutions to problems.

Advantages:

1.This style of leadership is often the most advantageous since it encourages team spirit. It helps motivate and satisfy other members in the group.

2.You take the point of view of other members in the group into account. You synthesize, reformulate and summarize ideas by others to reach a consensus or the central idea. You facilitate group discussion.

3.You feel that others have useful knowledge and experience just as you do. You encourage the group to share and discuss.

4.You support the group. You help organize its approach. You are attentive to everything that is said. You respect everyone involved.

5.You have a positive attitude. You encourage participation by all. You maintain order during discussions and moderate the right to speak.

6.Your attitude can be summed up as follow: Let’s work together.

Disadvantages:

1.Consulting members can slow down decision making.

Lazy leadership

Advantage:

1.The other members of the board of directors and the staff enjoy a large amount of freedom for decision making. They are empowered to make decisions.

Disadvantages:

1.You provide no leadership. You allow complete freedom for members and staff. You avoid problems. Your task as manager does not interest you much.

2.Since the staff has great freedom, they do what they like. Acting on their own, they often forget the main goals of the cooperative.

3.This often results in a lack of structure and loss of control.

4.Your attitude can be summarized as: Do whatever you want.

Note: None of these styles is ideal. A good leader must strive to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each style and know that the best leadership is found somewhere in between rigid authority and unbridled freedom.

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF MAN?

Spirit_man

Proverbs 20:27 says that: The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly. The human spirit is a very important part of everybody. What we are today and able to do is as a result of the condition of our human spirit. Man has made a lot of inventions and progressed from within, that is, from our spirits. Mention can be made of the cars, airplanes, spacecrafts etc. that have been invented. Medicine has also made so much progress over the century. Diseases that used to kill human beings some years back are not able to do so now because of medical advancement. All these advancements are as a result of the human spirit. The human spirit has also invented some lethal things which have brought about hardships in this world. How happy the world would have been if these energies that invented lethal things were channeled into inventing things that would have benefited the world!

When you become a christian, you are able to achieve much more because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your body. There is a union between your human spirit and the Holy Spirit. This union gives you the upper hand in any discovery in this world. The union conditions your spirit and helps you to know and do the right things.  To know your future is dependent on the condition of your spirit. Your spirit is responsible for searching out things in the spiritual realm and delivering them to you. That is why it matters what you read and imbibe into spiritual system. The word of God and the Holy Spirit have all it takes to condition our human spirit and give us an edge over the challenges of this world.  The Holy Spirit can aid us to discover more knowledge in medicine, science, engineering and any other relevant sectors in the world.

RIVERS OF LIVING WATER

ID-100173952-2

John 7:38 says, He that believes on Me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. How true this scripture is! Man is gifted by God to discover so much in this universe and to take care of this universe. Man has made much progress in science and engineering, economics and what have you.

However, man can do so much more because of the presence of God in our lives. As children of God, we are loaded with so many good things to benefit the world. If the natural man can do so many things from within, then the child of God can do much more from within. If you are a child of God and you are not making progress in at least an area of your life, then you got to go back to the word and rediscover yourself! This is the truth, that all that you lay your hands on to do shall prosper. The child of God is not a failure. You have so much deposited in your spirit which have to spring forth like a river. Talk of economic development, the child of God has the keys to unlocking new discoveries in economic development. Talk of science and engineering, economics etc., the child of God has the power to discover more to improve the well-being of people in the world.

The rivers of living water are the gifts or talents that spring forth from the child of God with ease through the power of the Holy Spirit to bless the world. A school of thought says that Christians are to blame for the hardships in this world! Though this is a harsh statement, it is partly true because if all Christians are to live up to expectation, the world would have been a better place than it is now because we have the strength to go beyond the natural ability of men. The power of God is at work in us to bless the world with health, technology, happiness, wealth and all the good things that you can think about!

WHERE TO INVEST

ID-10064199

A major characteristic of man is the ability to invest and make returns. For any production to be successful, one needs to invest in the factors of production in order to accrue returns. In our homes, parents would want to invest in the education of their dependants so that these dependants can become responsible citizens in future. In terms of location, several examples of investment options are available. The critical question is this-Do we invest in our current places of residence (that is, our district) or in our country or in other countries? The area (location) where you invest matters so much. This article will briefly try to answer the above question within the context of the good book.

An individual may be making progress through investment in a certain location. Another individual may want to replicate that success in the same location or elsewhere and make progress. Some other person may attempt and fail woefully. The fact that an individual is investing in a location and making progress does not mean you also have to invest in that location. Though God has said in His word that anything we do shall prosper, it is important to find out from God the specific location you as an individual can invest in to get more wealth or more prosperity. Genesis 26:12-13 states that “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great”. Isaac had the choice of relocating to Egypt where it appeared that he could make life better for himself and family but God advised him not to go but to invest his present location. In his days, more people were relocating to Egypt for greener pastures. Of course, some of these people may have made it there but for Isaac, God instructed him not to go.

When baby Jesus was born, Herod the king at the time was not comfortable and wanted to eliminate the child. God spoke to Joseph in a dream to relocate to Egypt with his family (Matthew 2:13-14). In one case, God did not allow Isaac to relocate to Egypt but in another case, God allowed Joseph to relocate to Egypt. What we can infer is this, where to invest is a personal matter. We should not base this on our senses- that is, by what we see around us. Our research may tell us that a particular investment location is promising but we need to go beyond research that is based on what we see, feel, touch, hear and smell and consult God to tell us the choice to make.
